What is Family Services Incorporated?
There comes a time in nearly every household when life demands more than a family can handle alone. It may be a violent crime, a runaway child, the stress of divorce or legal problems, an abusive environment, alcoholism or a disadvantaged family member. Family Services Incorporated (FSI) was formed to help in this time of need.
We are a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian social service agency. We are dedicated to providing programs and services that enhance the quality of relationships between individuals, parents and children, couples, families and communities.
We believe in the value of every person and his/her right to live a life filled with joy, love, stability and a sense of productivity. We are here to help improve that quality of life. Our services are aimed at helping each person use his/her capabilities, interests and desires to their fullest advantage.
How are we funded?
Family Services Incorporated is funded by a variety of federal, state and county programs and is therefore subject to budget constraints. FSI receives funding from managed care, the Department of Public Welfare, the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape, the Pennsylvania Coalition on Crime and Delinquency and United Way.
We are also dependent on monetary and in-kind donations received from special events, private citizens, businesses and volunteers who generously give us their valuable time and financial resources.
What is our history?
FSI was incorporated in 1928, although its roots can be traced back to 1889. The current agency is the result of a 1959 merger of the Blair County Childrens Aid Society and Family Services of Altoona. Family Services Incorporated has evolved into an organization whose Mission is Building Healthier Relationships Creating Healthier Communities.
Today FSI provides its expertise and support in the following areas: offering shelter services and specialized housing; targeting prevention of abuse and victimization; empowering those dealing with the results from abuse and victimization; and assisting victims of trauma from events or relationships in their lives.
