Yours, Ours, and The Community's

MAY/JUNE 2004 STAFF NEWSLETTER

Spring has arrived, but today, May 12, seems as though, from the temperature and humidity it is summer!

It is hard to believe that it took until February of 2004 to receive our first HSDF payment from the 03-04 state budget and the process has already started again for 04-05. Hopefully the process this cycle will be more timely, but only time will tell!

This issue shows that this organization is a small community that experiences the cycle of life like any other. You will read about the joy of those who have accomplished the completion of their current academic goals, information that will make Mother's Day 2004 more memorable and set a similar stage for Father's Day. On the more serious side of daily life, this is to inform you that one of our dedicated employees, Brenda Musselman, is dealing with the very unsettling experience of feeling pretty healthy through mid-April and now, finds herself in UPMC Shadyside, diagnosed with cancer. Given the complexity of her situation and the distance from home, the agency has retained the services of a nurse, case manager, to work with Brenda, her treatment team, and her family to ensure that all bases are covered concerning her care. She would appreciate cards (no gifts or flowers, please, given the level to which her immune system has been compromised). You can send them to her at:

UPMC Shadyside Hospital
Room 737 West
5230 Centre Ave.
Pittsburgh, PA 15232

I spoke with Brenda on the telephone this morning and she sounded stronger than in recent days.

New student interns have arrived in the counseling and crime victims support programs. TCI continues to generate additional revenue.

Unfortunately, the services from our domestic abuse project and its protection from abuse service continue to be needed on a regular basis in Blair County.

The board's marketing committee continues to very active, planning for future events.

As with the spring of every other year in the agency's 75 year history, we are very busy preparing the budget for the next year. We continue to search for operating efficiencies in order to adequately compensate our dedicated employees while maintaining the high quality services for which the agency has been known throughout its history.

Speaking of history, Mary Ann Hoover, our Finance Director, has put together her recollections from the agency's past - a great read!

Thanks to Bev Brisbin for composing The Focus and putting up with my editorial involvement!

Please call us if we can be of help to you or someone you know. Have a great early summer and be safe!

Mahlon Fiscel, Executive Director
