Through children

we can break the cycle of violence

What is Meghan’s Room?

Meghan’s Room is a counseling room to provide a safe haven specifically for children who are or have been victims and/or witnesses of crime.  Children up to age 18 come to Meghan’s Room to play and talk - both individually and in the group setting to provide the assurance that the violence is not their fault.

Meghan’s Room is also available to counselors and area law enforcement personnel to help interview children traumatized by violence and abuse.  This room is equipped with a two-way mirror so sessions can be confidentially observed by appropriate individuals.

Why is Meghan’s Room Important to our Community?

Violence can deny children the joys of childhood, can destroy a child’s sense of safety, can threaten a child’s physical and emotional development and can ruin a child’s self-esteem.  Talking to a person he/she trusts in a safe environment children can recover their self-esteem by recognizing that the assault was not their fault and to address the fear and anger they may feel.

Thoughts and feelings that remain unsaid tend to become very powerful and cause long term problems. When a child is encouraged to explore his or her feelings and to express they are provided with  the opportunity to achieve a sense of “mastery” over what has happened to them.   Through children we can break the cycle of violence and prevent future generations from living with the threat and fear of violence to themselves and others.

Meghan’s Room is the only program in Blair County that provides these services to children.
